WSSC Driver Charged in Fatal Crash with Bicyclist

The driver of a Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission truck faces two charges in the November accident that killed a Gaithersburg man.

More than two months after a Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission truck allegedly hit a Gaithersburg bicyclist, charges have been filed against the driver.

Montgomery County Police last week charged the pickup driver in the Nov. 24 collision that killed Andrew Gerard Malizio, 60, of the 300 block of Hart Road in Gaithersburg.

Investigators say that the driver of the WSSC Ford F550 truck, identified as John Kline, 52, of Hagerstown, was charged with failure to yield to oncoming traffic on a left turn and negligent driving.

The accident happened in the 12100 block of Darnestown Road at the entrance to a shopping center. Police say Kline’s truck was stopped and Malizio was unconscious in the roadway near his bicycle. Officers immediately started life-saving measures and were then assisted by Montgomery County Fire/Rescue personnel.

Despite these actions, Malizio died from his injuries at the scene; he was wearing a bicycle helmet.
