Bubb, Northwest Baseball End Slumps Against Seneca Valley

Jaguars beat Screaming Eagles 19-16 on senior night at Northwest

Senior Zack Bubb chose a fitting evening to bust out of a slump and help the Northwest baseball team awaken its dormant offense.

Bubb went 4 for 4 with seven RBIs, including a two-run single that drove in the game-winning run, and the Jaguars defeated Seneca Valley 19-16 Thursday on senior night at Northwest High School.

"We haven't been hitting lately, but luckily our bats came alive today and helped us," Bubb said. "... I haven't been hitting well lately, but I came in confident and I was ready to play. It was our senior game, so I wanted to win, definitely. I just stayed on the ball and did what I could."

Bubb had two triples and reached base in all five plate appearances.

Bubb has "been in a slight slump this year," Northwest head coach Todd Varesco said. "He's hitting every once in a while, sporadic, and he came out and hit the crap out of the ball today."

Northwest's Nick Siegel went 2 for 3, including a two-run triple that tied the score at 16-16 in the fifth inning

Northwest's 19-run outburst came after the Jaguars managed just four runs in their last two games --- a 12-2 loss to Paint Branch on Saturday and a 14-2 loss to Quince Orchard on Tuesday. Northwest finished with 13 hits and Seneca Valley totaled 17.

"We got clobbered by Paint Branch --- I mean, they clobbered us --- and then we came out and stunk up the joint against QO," Varesco said. "We had 13 walks and three hit batters, so pitching that day really didn't help us at all, and we didn't swing the bat. We had chances to swing the bat, but we were so far behind and we were in such a hole, it got pretty bad. Today, they never quit and ... the fortitude today was what we needed."

Tony Cianci pitched three innings of relief for Northwest and earned the victory.

Northwest (8-6) will travel to face Watkins Mill at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sherwood at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Seneca Valley will host Clarksburg at 5:15 p.m. today and Wootton at 5:15 p.m. on Monday.
