Screamin' Eagles Fall in Home Finale, Quince Orchard Tops Northwest

Seneca Valley loses third straight to Churchill while the Cougars topple Jaguars.

Churchill secured the No. 3 seed in the Maryland 4A West playoffs with a 59-51 win over Friday night in the home finale for the Screamin' Eagles.

Jesse Simon,  Jordan Bass and Kyle Edwards each scored 10 points in the win for the Bulldogs (16-5) while Seneca's Daquan Sampson led all scorers with 15. Robb Lim added 13 and Miles Cooper chipped in with 11 for Tom Sheahin's squad. The difference, however, was depth. No other Screamin' Eagle scored more than 5 points while Churchill had help from multiple sources.

Thanks to a strong first quarter where the Screamin' Eagles led by 11, Seneca built a first-half lead as it had done nearly all season, leading at the break, 30-24.

What has hampered Sheahin's team all year long unfolded again last night. The team began to unravel in the second half and in the game's final quarter with Seneca still leading by three, the Screamin' Eagles allowed 22 points in the last eight minutes.

The loss moves Seneca to 9-12 on the season with one game remaining on Tuesday, a road contest against Whitman.

Meanwhile, two miles up the road, fell to Quince Orchard as the Cougars' Ben Kelly and Andre Gaines both scored 16 points en route to a 67-38 win in the final regular season game for both schools.

What has turned into a rivalry of late, wasn't much of one last night. Quince Orchard built a 36-19 lead at the break and Northwest never threatened to make it much closer than that the rest of the way. Quince Orchard's now-signature fast tempo style was too much for Northwest as the Cougars improved to 16-6 with the 29-point win.

Detrick Hoes scored a team-high nine points for the Jaguars. Joey Portney added 10 points for Quince Orchard.

Northwest (10-11) closed out the season with two straight losses and await the playoff seedings that come out early next week.
