Teens Charged With Attempted Murder For Grocery Store Shooting: Police

Two teenagers have been charged for the March 20 shooting that took place at the Giant Food grocery store in Germantown, police said.

GERMANTOWN, MD — Two teenagers are facing attempted murder charges for a shooting that happened inside a Giant Food grocery store in Germantown.

The Montgomery County Police Department identified the individuals as Marcus Isaiah Jovon Braithwaite, a 19-year-old from Germantown, and 16-year-old Demba Tandia from Montgomery Village.

Police have not detailed a motive for the shooting.

Braithwaite and Tandia are facing the following charges:

  • Attempted first-degree murder
  • First- and second-degree assault
  • Reckless endangerment
  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime

Tandia is being charged as an adult.

The shooting took place March 20, just before 9 p.m., at the Giant Food located on the 18300 block of Leaman Farm Road. The store was filled with both shoppers and employees at the time.

Police say Braithwaite and Tandia, who were both armed, ran through the store, chasing after a man who was later shot several times near the front of the store. Both left the scene shortly afterward.

Authorities did not specify which of the two teens fired the shots.

The man was hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries.

Warrants for Braithwaite and Tandia were obtained the day after the shooting, police said. While Tandia was arrested March 25 in Sterling, Virginia, Braithwaite was arrested Tuesday in Germantown.

Braithwaite is being held at Montgomery County Central Processing Unit. Tandia is awaiting extradition.
