Pedestrian Hit By Truck, Killed On MD 295: State Police

A Brooklyn man whose car swerved into the median, was fatally struck by a truck after he got out of his SUV, state police say.

GLEN BURNIE, MD — A Brooklyn man whose car swerved into the median, was fatally struck by a truck after he got out of his SUV, state police say. The crash occurred about 5:45 a.m. Thursday on southbound MD 295 north of I-195.

Authorities say Hugh Anthony Clarke, 44, of Brooklyn, was driving a Honda Pilot when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a cable barrier in the median. After the accident Clarke got out of his SUV and was walking in the left lane of the roadway when he was struck by a truck.

The driver of the truck, Walter John Riehl Jr., 56, of Pennsylvania, remained at the scene, authorities say.

According to investigators, Riehl tried to swerve and avoid Clarke, but he was clipped by the truck's passenger-side mirror. Clarke was taken by ambulance to Shock Trauma in Baltimore, where he was declared dead.

Drugs, alcohol and speeding are not considered to be factors in the crash, state police say. Investigators are trying to determine what caused Clarke's vehicle to swerve into the median.
