Baseball Bat Assault Nets 7 Charges for HdG Man: Police

A 31-year-old Havre de Grace man has been charged in connection with an assault in Aberdeen that allegedly involved a baseball bat and a family beef.

Matthew Channing Vanreenen, of the 600 block of Bourbon Street, is charged with two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault, two counts of carrying a dangerous weapon with the intent to injure and one count of carrying a concealed dangerous weapon, court records show.

Vanreenen allegedly hit a 14-year-old boy and the boy’s father with a baseball bat related to a dispute with Vanreenen’s stepfather, according to Aberdeen Police.

Both victims pursued medical attention—the 14-year-old for a massive contusion on his upper left thigh and his father for injuries to the right side of his face, where he was allegedly punched by Vanreenen, police said.

Authorities responded to the assault, reported in the 100 block of Hanover Street in Aberdeen, at 4:35 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21, police reported.

When police were notified the suspect vehicle—a green minivan—was fleeing the area, one officer quickly saw the vehicle and detained the people riding in it pending investigation, according to the report.

Police said Vanreenen, who was a passenger inside the van, was arrested and charged. Nobody else in the vehicle was involved in the incident, according to Sgt. Shannon Persuhn.

Vanreenen is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing in Harford County District Court on Dec. 17.
