Discarded Cigarette Sparks Fire At Joppa Apartment's Maintenance Building: Official

The state fire marshal has ruled a blaze at the Mariner's Pointe Apartment Homes as accidental due to a discarded cigarette.

JOPPA, MD — A cigarette tossed into a trash bin inside the maintenance building at Mariner's Pointe Apartment Homes sparked a fire Monday shortly after noon. The complex is located at 321 Hardwick Place in Joppa.

Almost three dozen firefighters with the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company spent 10 minutes bringing the blaze under control, which was discovered by an employee. The fire has been ruled accidental by the State Office of the Fire Marshal with an estimated $10,000 in damage to the building and around $25,000 loss of property.
