Fire At Havre de Grace Apartment Building Ruled Accidental

HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — Improperly discarded smoking material was to blame for a fire at a Havre de Grace apartment building, the Office of the State Fire Marshal has determined. The fire was ruled accidental.

People in the three-story apartment building at 700 Pulaski Highway discovered the fire at 4:51 p.m. on Thursday, June 27. The Susquehanna Hose Company arrived and had it under control within five minutes, the fire marshal said.

Investigators said that the fire started on an exterior balcony, where smoking material had not been properly discarded.

The fire marshal advises people to dispose of smoking materials using sturdy ash trays and to make sure anything lit is completely extinguished before it is left unattended.

There was $500 in structural damage as a result of the fire, officials reported Friday.
