Icy Roads Possible Overnight in Harford County

Northwest and southeast Harford County may be affected, National Weather Service reports.

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement Sunday night for several counties in central Maryland, including Harford, cautioning travelers about possibly icy conditions.

“Please use extra caution if traveling tonight,” the National Weather Service advised at 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

With temperatures dipping into the upper 20s and low 30s overnight, the weather service said untreated roads may freeze and ice over.

Harford, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Howard and Prince George’s counties were advised to be cautious of icy conditions and reduce speeds on the roads.

The National Weather Service mentioned northwest and southeast Harford County, particularly Jarrettsville and Aberdeen, as areas that may be impacted in particular.

The special weather statement Sunday night came after an unexpected bout of freezing rain hit the region Sunday morning, including a fatal wreck in Harford County and a nearly 50-car crash in Howard County.

There were 175 motor vehicle collisions between the hours of 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday in Harford County, including one fatality, according to Jenn Chenworth-Price, spokeswoman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association.

Freezing conditions Sunday morning were not in the forecast from the National Weather Service until 8 a.m., while icy roads began affecting eastern Howard and much of Baltimore and Harford counties by 7:40 a.m., the State Highway Administration told The Baltimore Sun.
