Highway Worker Killed in I-95 Crash Near Havre de Grace

Police said the 59-year-old maintenance technician was struck in area of MD 155 exit.

Officials say an Abingdon man employed by the Maryland Transportation Authority died Thursday afternoon in a crash along Interstate 95 near Havre de Grace.

Michael Pearce, 59, of the 600-block of Baker Avenue in Abingdon, was a facilities maintenance technician whose crew was assigned to mow the grass off I-95 near the exit for MD 155 Thursday afternoon, according to Maryland State Police.

At approximately 1 p.m., a Ford van headed south on I-95 veered into the right shoulder and triangular area where the highway splits off into the exit, hitting a stopped dump truck and then Pearce, police reported.

It was not known why the van left the travel portion of the road, according to police, who said the incident remains under investigation and charges are pending.

Police said Pearce was pronounced dead at the scene. Other workers were not injured, police reported.

There was an 8-mile backup on I-95 south near MD 155 after 3:30 p.m., according to the Maryland Transportation Authority. The ramp will be closed from southbound I-95 for several hours for investigation, police said.

By 5:30 p.m., the Maryland Transportation Authority reported the ramp and lane had reopened in the area, and while the crash had cleared, there was a 10-mile backup that remained on I-95.
