Roof At Havre de Grace High Sparks Meeting

The Havre de Grace High School roof is the topic of a Thursday discussion in the city.

HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — The damaged roof at Havre de Grace High School is reportedly the topic of a community meeting Thursday evening. The roof was damaged during the March 2 windstorm that wreaked havoc across the region.

Powerful winds in the early March storm caused the Hatem and Tydings bridges to be closed for hours and schools to end early in Harford County.

One tree nearly fell on Meadowvale Elementary School, while part of the roof blew off Havre de Grace High School.

According to ABC 2 News, if this tree had fallen a little differently on Graceview Drive, it might have landed on Meadowvale Elementary School.

A mile and a half away, the Havre de Grace High School roof blew away and part of it had to be removed; however, school officials said afterward that the building was structurally sound.

"The roof has been...covered, with a permanent replacement soon to come," officials said on the school's Facebook page on March 3.

"Soon" is the operative word.

Now that April showers have hit, the roof leaks to the point that music programs and restrooms, according to The Aegis, which reports a community meeting about the roof is set for 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 5.

Harford County Public Schools officials including the assistant superintendent and director of facilities will attend the meeting to discuss the status of and plans for the roof repairs, The Aegis says.

The need for repairs comes as the Havre de Grace Middle High School project prepares to break ground; that is set for April 12 and is not expected to be completed until at least 2020.

The meeting will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, in the auditorium at Havre de Grace High School.
