Sobriety Checkpoint on Hatem Bridge This Weekend: MDTA

A DUI checkpoint is in store for Fourth of July weekend at the Hatem toll plaza, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

Make sure to have a designated driver this weekend.

The Maryland Transportation Authority will conduct a sobriety checkpoint on the Hatem Bridge in an effort to prevent alcohol-related crashes and raise awareness about the dangers of drunk driving.

Authorities said that they will be stationed at the Hatem Bridge toll plaza the evening of Saturday, July 2.

The legal limit for blood alcohol in Maryland is 0.08, and officials said that those with a blood alcohol level of 0.15 are 12 times more likely to crash than their sober counterparts. Those under the influence of marijuana are also 25 percent more likely to crash, according to a federal study.

Maryland Transportation Authority Police officers arrested more than 1,000 impaired drivers in 2015 and cited nearly 2,900 people for DUI.

In addition to arresting those driving under the influence, police will be offering information about laws regulating impaired driving to those who pass through the checkpoint.
