When we have warm fall seasons, as we have this year, it delays and prolongs the fall colors on the Shenandoah Mountains. So the leafy canopy is still in full foliage now as we move into Veteran's Day Weekend.
According to Fodor's Travel, early November will still have great vantage points for those within driving distance of the mountains in Virginia.
The Shenandoah National Park has over 197,000 acres of land and most known for panoramic views from Skyline Drive. Most years, getting a room at the Skyland or Big Meadows lodges is near an impossibility. However, with the National Park Service forced to shutdown for a few weeks, many in our Mid-Atlantic Region thought there was no chance to book. Au contraire! Rooms are available at Skyland on Friday, Sunday and Monday of this long Veteran's Day weekend.
Meanwhile, with Veteran's Day, Delaware North Companies is offering special blackberry ice cream and it's signature mile high blackberry pie made with the fruit which grows here indigenously. It's free for families booking a room night and of course for any member of the Armed Services and their families.
This weekend is also "Fee Free" entrance passes at the National Parks. The National Park Service offers free gate admission to Skyline Drive which saves folks a couple bucks for the long holiday weekend.
