$1812 in College Scholarship Money Is Available

The Star-Spangled Banner Flag House today announced an essaycontest open to local high school seniors. The contest winner will receive $1,812 in scholarship money toput toward a college of his or her choice.

The guidelines of the contest are simple: students must submit a 250 word essay via a web-based formthat answers the questions “how is the American flag relevant to you?”

"We thought it was an appropriate amount of money, considering that it’s the Bicentennial of the War of1812,” says Annelise Montone, Executive Director of the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House. "It’s a goodchance for a student to win some money to put towards his or her education. The Flag House’s missionis to foster personal connections to American history and we thought this was a good way to do that foryoung people.”

Nominations will be accepted until February 15th at 4:00 p.m. and must be submitted via a form locatedon the Flag House website at www.flaghouse.org.

“This is a wonderful and unique opportunity for area students to express their connection with a pieceof history so closely tied with our local community,” said David Gildea, Flag House & Star SpangledBanner Museum’s President of the Board. “Scholarship money and a chance to be a part of the Flag Daycelebration are added bonuses!”

The winner will be chosen by a panel of judges and will read his or her essay aloud at the annual FlagHouse Flag Day Celebration on June 14th, 2013.

The Star-Spangled Banner Flag House, a national landmark, has been a museum since 1927. Built on the cornerof Pratt and Albermarle streets in 1793, the little house is the site where Mary Pickersgill created the Star-SpangledBanner.
