Effective April 15, 2013, United Cerebral Palsy of Central Maryland (UCP-CM), headquartered in Hunt Valley, will be known as Unified Community Connections (UC2).
“After careful deliberation, the board of directors of UCP-CM unanimously decided on a name change,” explained board chair Ilene Salcman. “Over 50 percent of the individuals we support have conditions other than cerebral palsy and many have multiple disabilities. We have individuals, for example, with Down syndrome, spina bifida and traumatic brain injury as well as other disabilities and chronic health issues.”
“More than 85 percent of the individuals we support have multiple disabilities,” she continued. “It was important to us that our name encompasses all of the individuals supported by our agency. Our new name, along with our new slogan, ‘Connecting people with disabilities to life’s possibilities,’ truly reflects our mission.”
President and CEO Diane Coughlin added, “We serve many individuals in Western Maryland and have been requested to provide services in other parts of the state such as Montgomery County. Our new name, Unified Community Connections, will facilitate our efforts to further broaden our geographic base.”
The services and staff of the organization remain the same and Unified Community Connections will continue to operate its day programs, residential services, in-home support services, No Boundaries Assistive Technology Center, employment and transportation services and the Delrey School.
“Our mission remains to support individuals with disabilities in achieving independence, productivity and the quality of life they seek. We are also committed to ensuring that every dollar raised through grants and donations remain in our community, helping individuals served by our agency,” Coughlin said.
