UPDATE: Elderly Man Killed in Monkton Fire

(UPDATE 11:21 AM)— An elderly man killed in an early Tuesday morning fire in Monkton has been identified as 80-year-old William Harrison Smith. 

The fire was reported at 12:25 a.m. by a neighbor, who saw fire on the front porch of a house in the 17000 block of Big Falls Road, said fire department spokeswoman Donna Welsh.

When crews arrived, the house was completely enveloped in flames, Welsh said. Firefighters found the man inside, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, Welsh said.

Welsh added that a tanker strike team was established to bring in water to the rural location.

Police and fire personnel are still investigating the cause of the fire.
