Five Ways to Savor Summer

A local mom shares some fun ideas for the summer.

Summer has officially arrived, and with it comes a blank canvas of possibility. Longer days, warmer temperatures, and fewer obligations mean, with a little creativity and planning, magical memories.

Each year, our family creates a summer to-do list. Here are some of our favorite activities.

1. Take a Hike

We are so fortunate to have so many hiking options in Baltimore County, many of which are right in our backyard. The trails at Oregon Ridge Park allow you to escape deep into the woods where you can discover extraordinary wildlife and vegetation.

For something a little more challenging, strap on your sneakers or grease up your bike for an adventure along the Torrey C. Brown Trail. The 20-mile route begins at Ashland Road in Hunt Valley and winds along the Gunpowder River to the Maryland State Line. My family enjoys bringing along our rambunctious lab who, after a long hike, enthusiastically scampers down the bank for a refreshing swim in the river.  On an especially hot day, we might just find an excuse to chase her in.

2. Float the Rapid

Speaking of the Gunpowder, there is nothing more quintessentially summer than an inner tube float down the river. Whether you prefer the more expansive Gunpowder, or the shallower Western Run, you are guaranteed a special experience. An inner tube from Southern States or the Monkton trail-head will serve as an ample raft unless you prefer an inflatable kayak from Dicks Sporting Goods in Hunt Valley. Tie a rope to a raft outfitted with a cooler full of drinks and sea-worthy snacks and you have a perfect afternoon outdoors, regardless of the rising temperatures. Check out the wildlife while you're there. I've seen beavers, snapping turtles and frogs.

3. Go Camping

Every summer, we meet with friends and plan a backyard camp-out.  Thanks again, to the convenience of area sporting goods retailers like Dicks and REI, each family arrives with a tent, often equipped with an air mattress and portable fan.  When the tents are pitched and chairs unfolded, kids enjoy games of capture the flag, freeze tag, and wiffle ball.  If we are lucky enough to find a spot near a pond, there is time for twilight fishing. As the sun goes down, we light the fire pit and portable charcoal grill for hot dogs and smores. We then light up our flashlights and glow-sticks and share ghost stories. Jelly jars are passed out so the kids can capture lightning bugs before bedtime.

4. Catch a Concert

Beginning mid-June, Ladew Topiary Gardens offers a lively concert series featuring live local bands who perform for picnicking families and fans. Bring along your lawn chair and picnic blanket and enjoy the summer sounds of reggae, swing and classic rock in an idyllic setting.

In July, Oregon Ridge opens its gates to fans of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for its 4-week concert series. This summer features the Star Spangled Spectacular and a tribute to the Beatles. You can also enjoy fireworks after the performance.

5. Rev Up Your Engines

For an especially unique summer outing, consider a trip to the Arcardia Fire Department’s Demolition Derby Series. Amidst the roaring engines and pungent smell of burning tires, you'll get a rare glimpse into the smash-up world of demolition driving. Pack a picnic (and some earplugs) or enjoy the snack shack offerings. Either way, you're in for quite a ride!
