GRAB & GO KIDS PLANNER: Cherry Blossom Festival Opens in D.C.

You know it is spring when the Cherry Blossom Festival opens in D.C. Thinking about starting a vegetable garden this season? Take the kids and get advice from a pro at Oregon Ridge Nature Center. And now is the time to sign up the kids for a new nature camp at Cylburn Arboretum before it fills up.

1. Nature Photography 

 Where/When: Irvine Nature Center, March 26, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Why Go: Children will learn basic camera skills, like the role of light and composition, by taking shots of Irvine's animals and wetlands. This is the first of a two session course. No experience is necessary. Kids should bring a digital camera. Ages 5 and up.

Pricing: Free for members, $10 for non-members, reservations required.

 Where/When: National Building Museum, March 26, 10 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. 

Why Go: Celebrate the opening of Washington's cherry blossom season with a family festival that explores Japanese arts and designs, Washington D.C. in the spring and the official opening ceremony of the 2011 National Cherry Blossom Festival.

3. Stream Clean Up 

 Where/When: CCBC Catonsville Campus, March 27, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

Why Go: Do a good deed by helping to remove trash and debris from a stream behind CCBC Catonsville. Register on the website. Ages 10 and up.

4.  Start a Successful Garden

 Where/When: Oregon Ridge Nature Center, March 27, 2-4 p.m.

Why Go: Join Master Gardener Lucy Wright and learn how to start and maintain a successful garden. Ages 12 and up.

Pricing: Free, reservations required

 

5. Cylburn Nature Science Camp 

 Where/When: Cylburn Arboretum, 1 week sessions, July 11-August 5, 9 a.m.- 3 p.m.

Why Go: Learn about small mammals, salamanders, birds, flowers, bugs, and trees at the Cylburn Mansion and grounds. Children will participate in activities that promote learning through play and discovery. This is a brand new camp so get a head start and sign up your kids for a week in the summer. Extended morning and afternoon hours are available for an additional fee. Ages 6 to 11.
