GREAT ESCAPE: Greek Week

Learn about Greek culture and food this week with events all across town.

The first Baltimore Greek Week is underway and there are many delicious ways to savor it at venues throughout town through Sunday, March 27.

Organized by the Baltimore-Piraeus Sister City Committee, the week’s worth of cultural and educational events are meant to spread the word about the group as it celebrates Greece’s independence from Ottoman Turkish rule 190 years ago.

Running through Thursday, March 24, Zorba’s Restaurant at 4710 Eastern Ave., will feature a Greek buffet from 5 p.m. to closing time. For $16,  you can choose from pork, grilled lamb chops, grilled octopus, and Greek salad, with the promise of some surprises on the side.

Take the opportunity to learn about the healthful benefits of following  the Mediterranean diet you’ve been sampling all week with a lecture at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, at the Acropolis Restaurant at 4718 Eastern Ave.

The week comes to a close in festive fashion with the Maryland Greek Independence Parade in Greektown on Sunday, March 27, at 2 p.m., featuring performers, dancers  and clergy members from across the state.

According to its website, the Baltimore-Piraeus Sister City Committee was founded in 1982 to promote cultural and business exchanges between Baltimore and Piraeus, Greece, both port cities. It in addition, it also devotes itself to philanthropic causes, including raising funds through its events for Cooley's Anemia research at Johns Hopkins, the restoration of The Liberty Ship S.S. John W. Brown, and the Ancient Collection of The Walters Art Museum. For more information about the committee and this week’s events, e-mail Baltimoregreece@yahoo.com or call 443-324-2543.
