Popular Falls Road Coffee Shop to Close After 10 Years

The Filling Station's Sparks location will remain open.

A popular local coffee shop will be closing its Cockeysville location on Sept. 30 after 10 years on Falls Road near the Shawan Road intersection.

owner and operator Meg Enns wrote on the coffee shop's website that "our lease has expired and we are unable to renegotiate a rational and reasonable rent with our landlord."

Alex Chay, a 20-year-old barista who has been working at the coffee shop since January, described the closing as "unfortunate."

"We have a very strong customer following," Chay said. "It's a unique spot for a coffee shop. There's a great view and customers can sit outside and relax."

Customers like Beverley Young are sad to see The Filling Station go.

"Everything [Enns] sells is always delicious and inventive," Young said. "And I think the store became a community meeting place, particularly in the morning. Many, many people will miss it when it closes."

Chay said The Filling Station staff is exploring other options, such as opening another store at a different location or starting a mobile operation.

The Filling Station's Sparks operation, which is based out of a building Enns owns, will remain open. Staff at the Cockeysville location will start working there.

The staff is also working out longer hours and evening programs for the Sparks coffee shop, Chay said.

"We are forever grateful for the friendships, love, loyalty and kindness that we have received during this time," Enns wrote on the website. "It is for these reasons and more that we worked tirelessly to keep the doors open, even through the tough economy, and remained a stronghold on the corner."
