I freaked Lucy out the other night when we were talking about boo-boos and I showed her my thumb, with the deep crack vertically through the thumbprint. All winter long, and now into the spring, the skin on the tips of my fingers has been cracking. This is nothing new, but it has gotten worse when it’s cold and also since I’ve had children and spent a lot of time washing my hands after changing diapers.
After seeing the giant crack in my thumb, Lucy slowly backed away from me and said, “Mommy, you need a Band-Aid. Let’s go do that.” Suddenly, our roles were reversed and she was taking care of me. I guess my thumb looked worse than I thought.
While she would have shared her Toy Story bandages with me, I opted for the usual, boring grown-up Band-Aids. So Lucy took me to the master bathroom and had me sit down on the toilet lid so she could go about her work. She unwrapped the Band-Aid, unpeeled the paper from the sticky straps and wrapped it around my ugly thumb. Lucy was pretty adept at something that I thought for sure would wind up in wasting Band-Aids.

Satisfied with her handiwork, we were then able to go back to the business of getting Lucy ready for bed. Going through the rest of the night’s routine, I thought to myself about how nice it was to be helped just a little bit by Lucy, trading places if only for a little while.
