PG County Liquor Official Indicted For Federal Bribery

Anuj Sud, 39, of Hyattsville was a Liquor Board Commissioner and is accused of accepting bribes in the performance of his official duties.

HYATTSVILLE, MD — A federal grand jury indicted a Prince George's County Liquor Board official for federal bribery, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Stephen M. Schenning announced Wednesday.

Anuj Sud, 39, of Hyattsville allegedly solicited and accepted bribes in the performance of his official duties in Prince George's County, prosecutors said.

Sud was a Liquor Board Commissioner and has been a licensed attorney in Maryland since 2005, with offices in College Park. Court documents state that Sud solicited bribes from a lobbyist in exchange for Sud's assistance with liquor board matters in September 2015.

Sud is accused of working with a lobbyist to vote favorably in upcoming hearings concerning the lobbyist's clients in exchange for money in December 2015. The lobbyist met with Sud and gave him $1,000 cash after each hearing went favorably for his clients, the statement adds.

"I am very concerned and deeply disappointed to learn of the news this morning that the Prince George’s County Liquor Board offices were raided and arrests were made by the FBI," Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker said in January. "Given the vigilance of my administration over the past six years to restore confidence in the Government, I commend the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the FBI, and the Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD) for their engagement and oversight of any corruption that takes place in Prince George’s County."

Sud is charged with two counts of bribery and faces a maximum sentence of ten years in prison for each charge.
