State of Emergency Declared

Missouri governor declares state of emergency ahead of expected grand jury decision in the case of Michael Brown.

Governor of Missouri, Jay Nixon sent for National Guard troops on Monday to surveil the Ferguson area while protestors await the decision of the fatal shooting of Michael Brown.

Nixon has declared a state of emergency keeping local police as the main enforcement while national troops play a backup role in response to any protests following the final decision.

”In the days immediately following Michael Brown’s death, peaceful protests were marred by senseless acts of violence and destruction,” said the governor according to CNN. The state of emergency will expire in 30 days if not extended by another order.

The past two days peaceful demonstrations have been held around St. Louis. The residents of Ferguson anticipate further unrest if the grand jury decides to not criminally charge officer Darren Wilson.

Police in Ferguson, regularly deploying officers in riot gear were being criticized for taking a military position against the protesters. They have been using tear gas and rubber bullets against crowds that ignited two businesses in St. Louis and occasionally threw rocks and gas bombs at police.

Many protesters have responded angrily to the possibility of Wilson returning to work if he is not indicted although local officers said that he would immediately be fired if charges were brought.

“We want an indictment. The cops don’t like it,” chanted protesters who marched the streets of Ferguson.

Officials have reported that the grand jury’s decision should be determined this month.

Some area schools have told parents that they will dismiss school early the day the decision comes out and many business near the stretch of downtown where they experienced the worst rioting following the shooting of Brown, have boarded up their windows as a protective move.
