Happy Tuesday, people of Laurel! Here's everything going on today in town.


First, today's weather:

An afternoon t-storm; humid. High: 76 Low: 64.


Here are the top five stories today in Laurel:

  1. The first person in the nation to win a $10 million Double Play top prize from Maryland Powerball is a resident of this state. The Rockville Exxon at White Flint in the 11400 block of Rockville Pike sold the winning Powerball Double Play ticket. As of Monday, the identity of the Double Play winner remained unknown. The retailer will earn a $10,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery. (WBAL TV Baltimore)
  2. Paramedics delivered a baby at a Laurel fire station Monday morning. According to Howard County Fire, a woman in labor pulled into Station 11 because her baby was on the way and she didn't have time to go reach the hospital. Firefighters and paramedics on the scene were able to help deliver a healthy baby in the back of an ambulance. (CBS Baltimore)
  3. RB Racing's 6-year-old multiple stakes winner Battle Station returns in just seven days as part of a wide-open field of 12 entered in Saturday's $100,000 Laurel Dash at Laurel Park. Battle Station drew Post 5 in the Laurel Dash, which comes on the heels of a troubled fifth-place effort behind 108-long shot Hollywood Talent in the Sept. 25 Turf Monster (G3). Battle Station was beaten by four lengths that day, but finished ahead of the top two choices. (Past The Wire)
  4. The University of Maryland Medical System announced on Oct. 1 that 98% of its doctors and other clinical workers are vaccinated against COVID-19 or received an exemption. According to officials, 96% of the staff in the extended system, including physician offices and urgent care centers, are vaccinated. (Baltimore Sun)
  5. Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) says it will stop handing out free suppers to some students starting this week. This decision was made due to supply chain issues and national shortages. Students enrolled in before- and after-school enrichment programs will continue to receive supper, but all other students will lose access. The number of students who will no longer get free supper is unclear, but it was reported that roughly 36,631 suppers have been passed out each day so far this school year. (WTOP)
