Here are the top five stories in Laurel today:

  1. The Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George's County, part of the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), recently announced its new exhibitions opening Labor Day weekend at Montpelier Arts Center. (Press Release Desk)
  2. Marylanders in multiple counties recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment affirming women's right to vote as part of the Women's Equality Day Celebration (WEDC) across Maryland. WEDC is a coalition of nonprofits coming together to shine a light on the many women of the Maryland suffrage movement and to bring a local Suffrage Centennial celebration to Marylanders. All celebratory events honored the sacrifices and successes of the suffragists and linked their historic achievement to the ongoing fight for women's rights. Prince George's County held in-person celebrations on August 28. (Maryland Daily Record)
  3. Walmart Inc. recently decided to give 565,000 of its U.S. store workers raises of at least $1. This decision puts the spotlight on the industry's competitive labor market as the holiday shopping season is set to kick off. The holidays mark the busiest time of the year for stores as people shop on and around Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Christmas. Last year, big-box rival Target provided a Coronavirus health plan and paid workers $15 an hour. (Reuters)
  4. Mayor Craig A. Moe invites all local youth organizations to apply for the Fall Youth Services Commission Grant. Laurel Parks and Recreation will be accepting applications until October 31. Grants will be awarded on December 15, 2021. The grants will provide limited financial support to those qualifying youth organizations that are not-for-profit and serve Laurel area communities with at least 10% of the participants living in this city. (City of Laurel)
  5. Health officials in Prince George's County, have added three new vehicles to the mobile COVID-19 vaccine fleet ahead of Labor Day Weekend, in an effort to reach more homebound residents amid the delta variant surge. The addition of the mobile units contributes to the county's efforts to administer COVID-19 vaccine boosters to immunocompromised residents and to vaccinate school-aged children between the ages of 12 and 18.
