- Professional boxing is returning to the Washington, D.C. region after more than 18 months due to the pandemic layoff with an event at the Entertainment & Sports Arena. The co-main event will feature hard-hitting fan favorite Demond Nicholson of Laurel taking on New Jersey's Decarlo Perez in a scheduled eight-round bout. (World Boxing News)
- A 22-year-old man was killed early Friday when a car hit him as he was walking along Baltimore Avenue in Laurel, Maryland State Police said. Ackeem Patrick Spence was declared dead at the scene. (CBS Baltimore)
- Five years ago, researchers at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, created the Brain Observatory Storage Service & Database (BossDB) with an eye toward making data open, accessible and easy to use. Now, an expanded collaboration between BossDB and the Amazon Web Services Open Data Sponsorship Program will further enable the storage and accessibility of ever-expanding neuroimaging datasets generated by the neuroscience research community. - A $2.3 million payment to a group of Black and Latino police officers to settle their workplace discrimination lawsuit against a Maryland police department is the latest effort toward reforms within the department. Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks said she will make sure that the future actions of the Prince George's County Police Department don't support bad behavior. (CBS Baltimore)
- "Pizza Man" of Laurel attributes his success in business and his recent $100,000 scratch-off win to his confident attitude. The 50-year-old lottery enthusiast runs a cleaning business and is in the process of opening two Ledo Pizza franchise locations in Washington, D.C. "Pizza Man," as the anonymous winner nicknamed himself, plans to plow his prize into his business ventures. (Bay Net)
- Maryland is reporting more than 100 new COVID infections for the eighth straight day. The Maryland Department of Health confirmed 155 cases this Tuesday and doctors say they are fueled by dangerous strains targeting the unvaccinated. Dr. David Dowdy, associate professor of epidemiology with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said Delta variant cases are doubling every two weeks. (CBS Baltimore)
- The Maryland Department of Agriculture has informed the City of Laurel that it will be spraying city-wide with two spray trucks for mosquitoes during the evening of Sunday, July 25. Mayor Craig A. Moe wants to ensure we give residents enough notice of the spraying occurring this Sunday and remind you that the formula that is used has not changed and is not harmful to people and pets.
