Police Arrest Shooting Suspect + City Replaces Recycling Bins

Welcome to the Laurel Daily! Here's your source for all things going on in the community.

(Patch Media)

Welcome back, Laurel! Let's get you all caught up to start this Monday off on an informed note. Here's everything you need to know about what's happening today in town.

First, today's weather: Clear throughout the day. High: 83 Low: 65.

Here are the top four stories in Laurel today:

  1. Jockey Sheldon Russell celebrated his 1,500th career victory Saturday, guiding Madaket Stables, Albert Frassetto, Mark Parkinson, K-Mac Stables and Magic City Stables' Hello Beautiful to a popular 3 ¾-length score in the $100,000 Alma North at historic Pimlico Race Course. This race was part of the Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred Championship (MATCH) Series. (laurelpark.com)
  2. The rise of COVID-19 cases, linked to the spread of the Delta variant, has caused Fort George G. Meade and its tenant agencies to take a 180-degree shift in its approach to restrictions.
Fort Meade leadership recommended the installation move to Health Protection Condition Alpha after reaching a local case rate of two cases per 100,000 people. (Baltimore Sun)
  3. The City of Laurel Department of Public Works has resumed the process of replacing the mini 18 gallon recycling bins with 35 gallon recycle toters. This process has been ongoing over the last couple of years, but slowed down due to the Covid-19 pandemic. With the amount of food and commercial packaging made of recyclable materials increasing, the small bins aren't sufficient. (City of Laurel)
  4. On the morning of July 29, officers, detectives and members of the Emergency Response Team from the Laurel Police Department arrested 21-year-old Francisco Giovanni Garcia of Laurel, in connection with a shooting that took place on July 18. A handgun was recovered from Garcia during the arrest and further evidence was recovered during the service of a search warrant at his residence. (City of Laurel)
