One person was killed in a wreck after hitting a downed tree and about 15,000 residents were without power after strong thunderstorms moved through Montgomery County Tuesday evening.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services Spokesman Pete Piringer noted several incidents on his Twitter feed.

Numerous trees were down on Darnestown Road between Peachtree Road and Cattail Road, wires down, vehicles stranded, and the road blocked.

Piringer said a vehicle struck apparently struck a fallen tree, hit a pole and wires came down on the car. The driver died at the scene.

At 19700 Crystal Rock Drive in Germantown initial reports said people were trapped after a tree fell on an apartment building, but Piringer said residents got out and there were no injuries.

Response times were affected because of the storms and bad road conditions, he said.

According to the Pepco online outage maps, more than 15,000 customers in the county were without power at 10 p.m. And according to the timetable on the map, it will be Wednesday evening before every household has power restored.
