How Secure Do You Feel in Maryland Malls, Stores? SPEAK OUT
Readers speak out after the mall shooting in Columbia saying there is "no sense living in fear."

Malls are more than a place to shop; theyโre a gathering place in most communities. You often see people power walking in the mornings and teens hanging out on the weekends. With the recent tragedy at the Mall in Columbia, Patch asked people on Facebook whether the mall shooting would make them think twice about going to the local mall.
While some didnโt feel that it could happen in โtheirโ town, others said it could happen anywhere at any time so people just need to stay aware.
โMy distaste for malls happened several shootings ago,โ wrote Karen LePrell Schlicht on the Havre de Grace Facebook page. โI honestly prefer shopping there once a year when I have to for certain school clothes for my teen.โ

โAny store, school or populated area is just as likely to be targeted,โ wrote Kenneth Kreisel on the Bel Air Patch Facebook page. โAnyone at any time can shoot you for no good reason, that's just a fact of life.โ
โIt could happen at Walmart, Target โฆ well any store or any place,โ wrote Mary Jones on the Aberdeen Patch Facebook page. โWhatโs this world coming to?โ

โWhat will be will be,โ wrote Jackie Jax Stem, Westminster. โIf itโs going to happen to you, itโs going to happen. It may be the mall, Wal-Mart or in your own driveway. You canโt stop what is going to happen. No sense living in fear.โ
โWhen I go to any mall or any store I go in and get what I came for and come right back out but I am aware of my surroundings and watch the people!โ wrote Dana Jones Kennedy, Bel Air.
Virginia Barco Cain shared on the Dundalk Patch Facebook page that all was well at the Eastpoint Mall on Sunday adding, โAnywhere I go now though, I pay attention to my surroundings. You canโt stop living and the true reality is no where is 100 percentย safe today.โ
โI don't visit malls that much,โ wrote Michelle Watters, Bel Air. โEven going into a grocery store bothers me after the incident on Saturday.โ
โIโd rather shop small and local,โ wrote Julie Bensch Bahr, Owings Mills-Reisterstown.
โAbsolutely,โ wrote Stephanie Cullen, Towson. โEver since someone was shot in Towson Town Center, [itโs] felt a bit sketchy.โ
โMaryland is so stupid and ignorant about these gun laws,โ wrote Will Sparkes, Bel Air. โWe are better off having citizens armed with handguns so things like this can be stopped.โ
A handful of people on Patch pages across Maryland referenced the Beltway sniper attacks as a reminder of how random some acts can be.
Ken Lawrence, Anne Arundel, wrote: โCan happen anywhere. Even a movie or getting gas. Remember Montgomery County? Snipers.โ
โI will be more aware of what's going on around me while I'm out shopping,โ wrote Evelyn Vogt, Aberdeen. โIt's like when that gunman was shooting random people at gas stations and from highway overpasses, you look at everything differently.โ

โFreaks are everywhere,โ wrote Denise Lucas on the Bowie Patch Facebook page. โYou can't stop living because of these very isolated incidents. Sad times.โ
โDid I stop going to the movies, restaurants, marathons or government buildings โฆ no,โ wrote Heidi Falter on the Catonsville Patch Facebook page.
