Woman Rescued From Potomac River in Darnestown

Woman clung to tree for 45 minutes near Violettes Lock Road.

A 31-year-old woman from Woodbridge, Va. was rescued from the Potomac River near Viollettes Lock Road in Darnestown on Monday afternoon.

According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief Scott Graham, the woman was kayaking in the river when her boat capsized.

At 1:15 p.m., a bird watcher saw the woman clinging to a tree about 60 yards into the river from the Maryland side, Graham said.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue crews and U.S. Park Police launched out of Violettes Lock Road and successfully rescued the woman. She had been clinging to the tree for 45 minutes, Graham said.

Graham said the crews found the woman to be extremely hypothermic, fatigued and dehydrated. She was taken to a local hospital.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue are warning all people to use caution near the river for the next few days following this weekend's storm.

"We are urging all people to heed the warnings of national park service as well as those of us at the Montogmery County Fire and Rescue Service and for the next couple of days please evaluate any areas prone to flooding and make other plans as to whether you are going to recreate in those areas," Graham said. "The water is still peeking, not only is the water very swift but there is an extensive amount of debris in the water."
