Historically, DUI checkpoint and increased patrols have been an effective way to remove impaired drivers from the road, authorities said in a release. During previous checkpoints in Anne Arundel County, 407 arrests for DUI and 112 arrests for drug offenses have been made after contact with nearly 76,503 driver.

Checkpoints are an element of an overall strategy and prevention, education and enforcement that emphasize a reduction in the number of impaired driving crashes that could result in death or injury, police say.

Anyone who sees an impaired driver is encouraged to contact the police department at the non-emergency number, 410-222-8610. Please provide a description of the vehicle, a tag number and direction of travel.
