Fort Meade To Host 9/11 Event, Pentagon Survivor To Attend

Fort Meade will honor 9/11 victims with a ceremony this Friday. A survivor of the Pentagon attack will attend. Many lawmakers will speak.

FORT MEADE, MD — Fort George G. Meade will remember the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks with a reflective ceremony this Friday. Many lawmakers will attend the event. A survivor of the Pentagon tragedy will also be on hand.

That survivor, Joseph Wassel, was working at the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001 when a plane crashed into the Arlington, Virginia defense complex. Wassel earned praise for his actions that day. He is now a cyberspace executive at Fort Meade.

These politicians will offer remarks at the ceremony:

  • U.S. Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger
  • Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman

State Dels. Mark Chang and Mike Rogers will be there, but they will not speak.

The event is hosted by Col. Christopher Nyland of the Fort Meade Directorate of Emergency and Fire Services. The ceremony starts at 10 a.m. at the McGlachlin Parade Field Gazebo. It will head inside to 6619 Mapes Road if it rains.

The schedule includes a:

  • Moment of silence
  • Remembrance of the attacks
  • Final alarm
  • Rendition of "Amazing Grace" by the Montgomery County Firefighters Pipes and Drums
