Southwest Flight Makes Emergency Landing At BWI

Due to a problem with the flaps, the pilot of a Southwest flight had to make an emergency landing at BWI Airport.

ODENTON, MD — A Southwest Airlines flight had to make an emergency landing at Baltimore's international airport Tuesday night, according to reports. Flight 1805 from Aruba had a problem with the wing flaps, WTOP reports.

The flight had 135 people aboard, none of whom were injured during the incident.

The captain decided to go through with the emergency landing "out of an abundance of caution, Southwest spokesman Chris Mainz said, according to WTOP.

The Baltimore Sun reported Neysa Condron, a passenger returning from vacation with her two daughters, noticed the plane flying in a figure-eight-like pattern. "The pilot came on and told us that there was a problem," she said.

The pilot was flying the plane in a figure-eight pattern to burn fuel, which is "standard procedure," Mainz said. About 40 minutes later, the pilot calmly told passengers it would be a "fast landing," Condron said, because the flaps wouldn't be able to slow the plane.

"The crew are well-trained for these types of scenarios, and they did a remarkable job safely landing the plane," Mainz said.

BWI spokesman Jonathan Dean said the plane landed "safely without incident."

It's unknown what caused the problem with the flaps. The plane is out of service and is being inspected, WTOP reports.
