Home Explosion Near Woodlawn Damages 5 Other Houses: Officials

A two-alarm blaze with an explosion is under investigation at a home in Baltimore County, public safety officials report.

WOODLAWN, MD — A house exploded near Woodlawn Tuesday afternoon, causing a two-alarm fire that resulted in road closures and a shelter-in-place order, according to officials. It was the second residence to explode in the western part of Baltimore County in two days.

At 2:12 p.m., crews were battling the fire in 7400 block of Remoor Road, where one home exploded and at least five others were damaged, officials said. Nobody was injured.

The house where the explosion occurred was destroyed and the two adjacent homes had major damage.

No one was home at the time of the blast, the force of which severely damaged an adjacent residence, authorities said. The other adjacent home sustained fire damage, officials reported.

During the investigation, residents in the area were asked to shelter in place while investigators checked for structural damage and hazardous gases. BGE also responded to the scene.

Part of Liberty Road, including the ramps to from Interstate 695, were closed during the response. Eastbound Liberty Road/MD 26 was shut down, causing delays on both I-695 and Liberty Road.

Authorities were continuing to investigate the cause of the explosion and fire. Officials said that the blast on Remoor Road was "stronger" than the explosion that happened Monday in the Baltimore Highlands/Lansdowne area. In that incident, authorities said one person who had been home at the time was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center with serious injuries.
