Owings Mills Native Sues Penn State Organization Over Hazing

Asya Trowell, 18, of Owings Mills, is pressing charges against a fraternity and several of its members who she said beat her during a hazing ritual.

An Owings Mills native is pressing charges against a fraternity and several of members who she claims beat her during a hazing exercise at Penn State University, according to reports.

Asya Trowell, 18, said members of Omega Essence, a female auxiliary group to the male Omega Psi Phi fraternity, punched, slapped and kicked her, poured hot sauce on her face and whipped her with a wet washcloth on two nights in early April, according to The Morning Call and The Patriot-News.

Penn State police are currently investigating the case, the reports said.

Trowell went home the day after the incidents took place, where doctors told her she needed bed rest because of internal bruising.

She thought the organization was a part of a group of historically black fraternities and sororities called the National Pan-Hellenic Council, but Penn State does not officially recognize the fraternity among that group, The Morning Call reported.
