Owings Mills Woman Only Link Between NYPD Shooter, Maryland: Baltimore County Police
Ismaaiyl Brinsley had 'no ties to the Baltimore area' except relationship in Owings Mills, Baltimore County police said.

The man who shot and killed two NYPD officers Saturday gave “no indication” he planned to harm law enforcement, his former girlfriend from Owings Mills reportedly told police.
Shaneka Nicole Thompson, 29, of the 10000 block of Mill Run Circle, had an encounter that morning with the shooter—who was her boyfriend of less than a year—in which he shot her in the abdomen, according to a statement from the Baltimore County Police Department.
Ismaaiyl Abdula Brinsley, 28, did not live in Maryland and showed up at Thompson’s Owings Mills apartment unexpectedly at approximately 5:25 a.m., somehow getting past the secure lobby to knock on her door, which she opened, the statement said.

A dispute about the status of their relationship followed, leading to the shooting, according to the statement.
First, Brinsley put a gun to his own head and Thompson talked him out of it, NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said during a Monday afternoon press conference covered by the New York Daily News.

Thompson said she had never seen Brinsley with a gun before, according to the chief of detectives.
Two of Thompson’s neighbors heard a loud noise before 6 a.m. Saturday and called 911, police said.
A neighbor told The Blaze that Thompson banged on her door and said: “I can’t die like this” and pleaded for help. The neighbor didn’t open the door but dialed 911, telling the news outlet that blood stained the hallway.
After the shooting, Brinsley left the apartment with Thompson’s phone, police said. He called the victim’s mother and told her that he shot Thompson by mistake and hoped she would survive, then boarded a Bolt bus bound for New York, according to ABC 7.
As of Monday, Thompson was in critical condition at a local hospital, where she is expected to survive and was interviewed by detectives for less than an hour Sunday, according to Baltimore County police.

After hearing from the shooter Saturday, Thompson’s mother notified police of the call, NBC reported.
Baltimore County police said that Brinsley had no record of criminal activity in Maryland, and Thompson was his only tie to the Baltimore area.
Thompson had reportedly not been in the area long; she moved to Owings Mills from Fayetteville, NC, six months ago for work, according to the Wall Street Journal. She is in the Air Force Reserve, the New York Times reported.
Brinsley was homeless with family in New York, WJZ reported. His family said he had tried to commit suicide last year, according to NBC. His mother said he had a “troubled childhood” and was “violent,” the New York Times reported.
Despite his lack of criminal record in Maryland, Brinsley had a history with law enforcement elsewhere. He had been arrested 15 times in Georgia and four times in Ohio, according to The Washington Post.
While he was in Owings Mills, Thompson said that Brinsley had not mentioned police at all, according to the statement from Baltimore County. Roughly nine hours later, authorities reported Brinsley gunned down two officers in a patrol car in Bedford-Stuyvesant before running to a subway platform and turning the gun on himself as the subway doors closed, according to CBS News.
