Police ID Officer Who Shot Korryn Gaines

Initially, officials said they would not identify the shooter of Korryn Gaines due to threats against the police.

RANDALLSTOWN, MD — The policeman who fatally shot Korryn Gaines has been identified.

Officer First Class Ruby, a member of the Support Operations Division, shot the 23-year-old Randallstown woman after she pointed a shotgun at him and threatened to pull the trigger, according to police.

There was an exchange of gunfire between the officer and Gaines, who fired two rounds from the shotgun, but did not strike police.

Initially, officers went to the residence at Sulky Court around 9:40 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 1, to serve arrest warrants for Gaines and her boyfriend, Kareem K. Courtney, 39. He tried to leave the apartment with a child and was arrested on a warrant for assault, stemming from a June domestic altercation with Gaines.

Gaines barricaded herself in the apartment from police until the standoff ended around 3 p.m., police said.

Initially, the officer who exchanged gunfire with Gaines was not identified due to an "unprecedented number of threats against police, including threats and actions against specific officers and officials," according to a statement the Baltimore County Police Department issued last month.

In mid August, protesters demanded to know the officer's identity, chaining themselves to a railing outside the Fraternal Order of Police conference in Baltimore City. The identification of the police officer was one of several demands on their list, which also reportedly included the creation of external review boards to evaluate allegations of police misconduct and conversion of police union lodges into homeless shelters and community centers.

Officials said that Ruby, who has served the Baltimore County Police Department for 16 years, was involved in one prior police-involved shooting; that was in August 2007.
