Ravens Celebrate New End Zone Rules

'I want to see a lot of celebrations.' —Ravens head coach John Harbaugh

OWINGS MILLS, MD — The Ravens reportedly had a hand in the new NFL rules on end-zone celebrations.

Starting this season, players will be able to have certain types of celebratory activities without being penalized, according to an announcement from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

"We know that you love the spontaneous displays of emotion that come after a spectacular touchdown," Goodell said in a letter Tuesday. "And players have told us they want more freedom to be able to express themselves and celebrate their athletic achievements."

Players looking to revel in their athletic achievements may now use the football as a prop, hold group celebrations in the end-zone and celebrate on the ground (e.g., snow angels).

Still barred from the end-zone are "offensive demonstrations, celebrations that are prolonged and delay the game, and those directed at an opponent," Goodell said, actions that will have consequences.

A $12,000 fine and penalty flag can result from such offenses, which reportedly include twerking.

In deciding to revise the rules, Goodell said he met with coaches, officials, fans and more than 80 current and former players.

Among those with whom he reportedly conferred was Ravens head coach John Harbaugh. "I think they did the right thing," Harbaugh said to ESPN afterward.

"I want to see a lot of celebrations," Harbaugh told the BaltimoreRavens.com. "I want our guys to have fun, and I want our fans to have fun."
