
Don’t get me wrong. I love having Wegmans close by. And the variety of nearby eateries is also welcome, although wishful thinking to a bygone era (or to New York City) would have placed a few more non-chains in there.
Off the modest “eatery avenue” is a vast amount of once-empty space that could have been put to inspired use instead of yet more big box stores along Reisterstown Road.
Let’s just reimagine the space for a moment, shall we. There are several cultural and entertainment options appealing to a wide variety of tastes: Perhaps a theatre featuring local productions or concerts; or maybe a billiard hall with an arcade. Even a bowling alley would be welcome. And if I was really bold: How about a community art gallery or independent coffee shop?

It’s not that I’m oblivious as to the economic realities of our time—big box stores have the deep pockets real estate developers want—but we lose something as a community when it’s all about things to buy and not about memories to build.
No one is likely to leave Foundry Row hungry. But wouldn’t it have been nice to feast on some culture and community?
