T'was The Night Before School
T'was the night before school is a poem based lovingly on the original Christmas classic with a modern Parkville twist.

T'was the night before school starts and all through the town,
The teachers were working, not playing around.
The bulletin boards were all designed and completed

The cafeteria stock had not yet been depleted.
All that needed to happen was one little thing —

The children should come,
And those bells, they should ring.
But alas and alack, Irene, she came first.
So many lacked power,
First day dreams burst.
In Baltimore County, the schools they were closed;
This year, it seemed, teachers won by a nose!
The children would stay home one more day,
Allowing more time to sleep and to play.
The teachers, they celebrated with tears in their eyes,
How they welcomed that first day, but a delay was a prize.
More time to prepare, more time to consider
Had they done enough, or would they Twitter.
That if only they had another week to prepare
Such lessons they'd have, oh how the school board would stare!
For a teacher works more than you'd ever know.
He teaches, plans, decorates, and even so. . .
When students won't learn she never gives up,
She mediates, encourages, and she brings in her pup.
When kids don't play fair, their teacher may sigh
But in that sigh, he's giving one more try.
Now there is no school on the first day this year.
The power has done it, or what's that I hear?
Irene's gone and done it, she was a doozie.
But come on Ian, let's go Susan; Hurry up little Suzie.
Get out of bed Harry;
You too Nick, and don't forget Mary.
School's starting a bit late, and you know what that means,
New clothes on display, new hair and new jeans.
Kids nervous and cocky, they're all off kilter,
Cause this year it's like riding a tilter.
New parts of school, new teachers, and friends.
Time to go guys, the bus is here it's coming round the bend!
Eat breakfast, grab your books, take your lunch, here's a kiss. .
Have a great day dear, it's you I will miss!
Best of luck to our school teachers, principals and others
Who take our children every day and their 'sisters' and 'brothers'.
We know they aren't perfect, some aren't even nice.
Thank you for teaching, not judging our life.
Thank you pre-k, elementary school too.
Middle and high school we take our hats off to you.
