Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Celebrated at Oak Crest
"Today in fellowship, we reflect on the impact that Dr. King continues to have on our spirit, hearts and souls"
Parkville, Maryland—Oak Crest, the Erickson Living retirement community, honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with an intergenerational tribute luncheon on January 23.
More than 175 residents, employees and guests attended the annual event, sponsored by the Diversity and Inclusion Council. Mark Roussey, Executive Director, provided the opening remarks.
“Today in fellowship, we reflect on the impact that Dr. King continues to have on our spirit, hearts and souls,” said Mr. Roussey. “I am in awe of his faith, and his words… such as courage, clarity and compassion…guide us to live with a purpose bigger than ourselves.”
Oak Crest was honored to have Lenora Booth, its former Executive Director (1997-1999), deliver the keynote address. Ms. Booth spoke of her involvement in the civil rights movement in the 1960’s as a college student in Greensboro, North Carolina and how those experiences shaped her career.

Employees from Oak Crest were featured throughout the program. Dameon Fletcher, Director of Continuing Care, and Ms. Jazmine Seignious, a student in her senior year at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, presented their personal reflections of Dr. King’s legacy. Estella Sullivan, Employee of the Month from Human Resources, and Michael Kelly, Leader of the Quarter from the Transportation Team, recited Dr. King’s most famous I Have a Dream speech. Jim Truitt, Pastoral Ministries Manager, provided the opening blessing.
The talented and enthusiastic Voices of Northwood student choir from Northwood Elementary School provided musical inspirational throughout the celebration with a wide-ranging selection of spiritual and patriotic songs.
