Aug. 22: U.S. Education Secretary to Visit Perry Hall High

UPDATE (Aug. 21, 1:31 p.m.)—U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has chosen , Baltimore County's , as the backdrop for a .

Baltimore County , Maryland State Superintendent Dr. Lillian M. Lowery, other administrators and nearly 850 language arts teachers are expected to greet Duncan at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 22, inside the school at 4601 Ebenezer Rd., county schools officials announced.

"Secretary Duncan will kick off a day of professional development and group workshops among the teachers," according to a release.

The event will include group discussions on the U.S. Department of Education’s RESPECT Project.

According to the release:

The RESPECT Project (Recognizing Educational Success, Professional Excellence and Collaborative Teaching) is a national conversation led by the Teacher Ambassador Fellows to help provide input on the effort to reform teaching. The initiative’s goal is to work with teachers, school and district leaders, teachers’ associations and unions, and state and national education organizations to spark a dialogue that results in strong policy and a sustainable transformation of the teaching profession.

"We are very excited to officially welcome Secretary Duncan to Perry Hall High School. It's very exciting for the community and the kids to have someone of his stature visit the school," said.

Duncan, a 47-year-old Democrat who holds a bachelor's degree from Harvard University, was appointed by in 2009. He previously worked seven years as CEO of Chicago Public Schools.

Duncan joined President Barack Obama, while visiting another Baltimore County school, Parkville Middle School and Center of Technology, on Feb. 11, 2011.
