Autumn Breeds Back to School Germs

Help prevent sick days with these simple tips

The beginning of a new school year brings much joy and excitement. Unfortunately, it can also bring with it pesky germs and sickness. Luckily, good hand washing and some simple precautions can greatly reduce the risk of getting sick this year.

Hand washing is the single most effective way of preventing infection, and should be done prior to eating, using the toilet, after touching animals, and after coughing and sneezing. Effective hand washing begins with regular soap and water. Antimicrobial soap is no more effective than regular soap. Simply wet hands with warm running water, apply the soap, lather well, rub hands vigorously for 20 seconds, being sure to get all surfaces, rinse well, and dry with a clean towel.

Vaccinations are also crucial in preventing infections, and are required for all students before attending Baltimore County Public Schools. All children are required to be up to date on vaccination as outlined by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Specific information and schedules for vaccinations can be accessed at www.EDCP.org.

Other simple precautions for preventing infection include covering sneezes and coughs, avoiding touching your face, and avoiding sharing food and drink. In addition, seasonal flu shots are a very effective against many strains of the flu, and are easily administered at your doctor's office or given at no or low cost at many stores in the area. Simple precautions will make this a happy, germ-free school year.
