As the remnants of Tropical Depression Ida pass over the region Wednesday afternoon and evening, Baltimore County has urged residents to prepare for severe weather.

"We are likely to see strong winds, downed trees, flash flooding, flooding and other storm-related issues, so it is important that we stay vigilant," County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr. said during news conference Tuesday. "We expect the storm to be its heaviest on Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning. Accordingly, we're urging residents to take this opportunity to plan."

Here are ways the county encourages people to be prepared:

"If you can, please consider a telework option," Olszewski said. "Please stay off roads whenever possible and if you must be on roadways, we encourage you to use extreme caution and be aware of flooded roads and other dangerous conditions. And remember, if you see significant standing water, please make sure to turn around."

A flash flood watch is in effect for Baltimore County until 8 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2, as heavy rains threaten to cause a rapid rise in water level.

During the flash flood watch, 2 to 4 inches of rain could fall as the remnants of Ida interact with a stalled front. Up to 6 inches of rain are possible, according to the National Weather Service.

Storms with damaging winds and tornadoes are possible Wednesday afternoon and evening, forecasters say.

Due to weather, the Maryland State Fair decided to close Wednesday. It will reopen at noon Thursday.
