Perry Hall Elementary Students Green the Grounds

More than 600 students and administrators participated in Spring Cleaning Day on Friday.

Friday was no regular school day at Perry Hall Elementary.

More than 600 students and administrators participated in Spring Cleaning Day. In turn, each grade level had 30 minutes to pick up trash, plant seeds and lay down compost and mulch.

"Our goal is to teach our students about the importance of not littering, recycling and composting, as well as planting indigenous plants in their gardens to sustain the environment," said Kim Lurz, a classroom assistant and volunteer during the event.

Second grade students were chosen to plant 15 packets of Black-eyed-Susan seeds in two small gardens in front of the school. Baltimore County provided one truckload of mulch during the clean-up.

"The children seemed to have a great time and the kindergarten classes were especially excited about the discovery of the difference between trash and compost," Lurz said.
