WHIZ KIDS: Vincent Farm Holds Animal Service Project

Students in White Marsh collected items for the Baltimore Humane Society.

Second grade students at Vincent Farm Elementary developed a deeper understanding and appreciation for animals this past school year, school officials announced.

The school's Animal Shelter Service Learning Project involved learning about animal needs, the responsibilities of pet-ownership, the purpose of animal shelters and conducting a drive for supplies at the Baltimore Humane Society.

The project allowed students to "participate in an authentic, real-world project in order to increase their awareness of animals’ needs, better understand compassion, and give back to the community," said school counselor Jennifer Hecht, who helped coordinate the event with second grade teachers.

Students learned about pet safety and the meaning of a non-profit organization from a representative of the Snyder Foundation for Animals. They also met Spirit, a service dog, and received a virtual tour of the BHS.

During the entire month of May, students promoted a drive to collect items for cats and dogs at the BHS. With the help of posters, morning announcement commercials and classroom visits, students collected food and treats, toys, food bowls, blankets, towels, bedding, leashes, cat litter and cleaning supplies.
