Pikesville Softball, Baseball Both Earn Second Wins

Teams win for second time, but defensive problems continue to be a hinderance for both.

The Pikesville softball and baseball teams each earned their second wins of the season this week.

For softball, the week began with a 19-9 rout of New Town in a five-inning game at home. The Panthers scored 10 runs in the first inning to take control and rolled to an easy victory.

Ty Baxter went 4-for-4 and scored four runs. Abby Molofsky (2-for-3, three runs) and Jess Rubin (1-for-2) also helped the offense. Sam Shapiro was the winning pitcher and threw a complete game.

Errors crushed Pikesville in this game as the Generals got eight unearned runs. Dani Lee was called up from the junior varsity and pitched six innings.

“Errors have been hurting us all year long,” said Pikesville coach Mike Behrens. “The offense has been there.”

It was there in the Patapsco game as Pikesville took an 11-5 lead after three innings. But the Patriots tied the game with six runs in the fourth and ended it with 11 runs in the fifth.

Molofsky (3-for-3, two doubles), Emily Friedlander (2-for-3, five RBI) gave the Pikesville offense some punch in the loss.

The baseball team split two games and ended the week with a 2-4 record.

The Panthers rolled to a 22-4 victory over Carver A&T on Wednesday. Dane Epstein struck out six and giving up two hits in three innings. Mitch Goldstein added two good innings with four strikeouts and two hits.

Goldstein helped his own cause with three hits and two RBI. Ross Hyatt got a double and triple as part of his three-hit day.

Patapsco handed the Panthers an 11-9 loss the next day. Pikesville made four errors and gave up seven unearned runs – the Panthers had three errors the day before.

“Our defensive issues continue to haunt us,” said Pikesville coach Joseph Kramer.  “But offensively our team is playing well right now.”
