An Urban Oasis

Take A Stroll Any Time of Year

I'm guessing over the years you have past this place over and over again, and no doubt never stopped. I'm talking about the Cylburn Arboretum across the street from Sinai Emergency. With more than 200 acres, this city park is indeed an urban oasis. It's managed by Baltimore City and welcomes about 40,000 visitors a year.

Your first stop should be the Vollmer Visitors Center. Get a brochure and plan your visit, though walking in any direction is also a plan. There are planted gardens to see, trees to examine, many with name tags. To me a tree was a tree until I saw how many varieties there are. Bird watching is also popular, as is sitting on a bench and enjoying the quiet.

The historic Cylburn Mansion was built by the Tyson family after the Civil War. The Tysons were grain merchants and exporters who made their fortune mining chromium, copper and iron. Bike riding is allowed and for you walkers, there are 3 1/2 miles of walking trails. Did I mention it's all free.
