It's All About Drawing at Yellow Barn Weekend Exhibition

This weekend's First Annual Yellow Barn Drawing Exhibition will showcase a medium that's diverse and sometimes a bit overlooked.

"At Yellow Barn, painting tends to be the primary medium," said , studio manager of Yellow Barn Studio and Gallery.

The exhibition intends to focus the spotlight on the strong drawing skills of members and instructors," he said. "To show drawing's importance to art world. It's not just a prerequisite to painting. By itself it's a beautiful art form."

Anyone who's a member was eligible to submit up to three images of their drawings including pencil, pastel, pen and ink, charcoal. "Pretty much anything that's not paint," Bruns said.

More than 600 artists and supporters are currently members of Yellow Barn. Members are from as far as Virginia with many from around Glen Echo, Bruns said. The classes—more than 40 offered each seasonal term—pull in students from a 20-mile radius, he added.

More than 60 pieces of artwork will be exhibited, and Bruns said the work represents a good cross-section of those mediums.

Of the 16 instructors who teach at the Yellow Barn, four, including Bruns, will exhibit their drawings.

"We have some pretty big pieces," Bruns said. Dimensions are as small as 6 inches by 8 inches and as large as 36 inches x 40 inches.

Art patrons will be glad to know that many of the drawings, ranging in price from $90 to $3,000, will be available for purchase.

"Really nice, affordable artwork," Bruns said.

An opening reception for the First Annual Yellow Barn Drawing Exhibition will be held Aug. 20 from 5-7 p.m. at Yellow Barn Studio and Gallery, located at 7300 MacArthur Blvd., Glen Echo, MD. Exhibition hours are Saturday, Aug. 20, and Sunday, Aug. 21, from noon to 5 p.m.
