POTOMAC, MD — A 4-year-old boy with disabilities has been reunited with his therapy dog that went missing more than three months ago.

Macks disappeared from his Potomac home on May 13. According to Montgomery County Police, he may have been picked up by a landscaping crew working in the neighborhood.

The family spent months searching for Macks, and had nearly lost hope.

"After searching far and wide, the family of Macks had almost given up hope that they would ever be reunited and a 4-year old boy was distraught," Montgomery County Police said in a statement. "Though media outlets publicized the family's plight and a reward was offered, the silence was deafening to the languishing child and his family."

But all of that changed last week.

On Aug. 23, the family was contacted by someone who claimed to have found the therapy dog and wanted to collect the reward.

Police said officers were emotionally invested in this case and wanted to pursue their lead without causing more grief to the boy.

"In an abundance of caution and a strong desire to bring Macks home, the officers from those units facilitated a meet with the person stating they had found Macks. Ensuring additional heartbreak did not occur to this young boy weighed heavy on the officers," police said.

Macks was reunited with his family later that evening.
